Required Safety Signs to Pass Inspection – Code Signs

Signs are usually forgotten until the very last minute and can be a source of frustration for lots of contractors and builders – as well as sign companies! The last thing you want to happen is a delay on opening because of a lack of required signs which are required to pass code inspection. Safety and regulatory signage are easy to overlook because they are, frankly, boring. The good news is that these signs are quick and easy to manufacture. The following list goes over some of the various signs that may be specified in a sign code required by local governments and other regulatory agencies. Fire Access Control Panel (FACP) Signs

Fire Access Control Panel signs, also called “FACP” signs, is a type of safety sign that is useful to firefighters in the case of a fire in the building. FACP signs sometimes are required to be made with reflective materials so they will be easier to spot in darkness. Using consistent and unified designs for these signs is necessary, so they are always featured in a red and white color scheme with sans-serif typefaces for the lettering.

Elevator & Stairwell Signs

Anytime there is a building with more than one floor, there will be a need for stairwell and/or elevator signage. In case of a fire, building occupants will need to use the stairs to get to the ground-level floor. These signs typically also need to be made ADA compliant, so they must be highly visible with a contrasting foreground and background and clear braille below the text.

Exit Signs

Exit signs must be placed throughout a public building to designate the areas where occupants can safely exit the building. Exit signs, like most emergency signage, must be highly visible so plan the design of these signs around that objective. Illuminated exit signs are a requirement for virtually all newly constructed buildings and must be illuminated throughout the day and night.

ADA Restroom Signs

ADA restroom signs are required for buildings that have an accessible public restroom and they need to be fabricated within ADA sign guidelines. While there are a lot of restrictions when it comes to the design of ADA restroom signs, there are still ways to make them to complement the existing environment. Architectural laminates come in a variety of different finishes, like wood grain, and can be closely matched to existing features to tie the design of the space together.
